So yesterday, a great dancer by the name of Andrew Sinkinson passed away and will be greatly missed. There’s a big RIP Andrew Sinkinson thread on dance forums.
I remember, I took my lesson at Imperial Ballroom in the San Francisco Bay area, and he gave me some exercises that I need to practice by myself, but unfortunately, I can’t remember them now. However, there’s one part of the lesson that I distinctly remember when he was talking to my partner.
He told her well you’re too slow, and you’re too fast. So that was an interesting thing to say. He said she was too slow to respond to the lead and too fast to arrive on the step. The way he stated it was so memorable that I will always remember about this method of teaching. He was such a great teacher and I only had just this one lesson with him but so many people will miss him and I’m so lucky to have had a chance to work with him.
I had a great partner and I’m sure she learned a lot from him too. A lot of times they traditional male teachers only teach the woman, but he definitely talked to both of us and I really appreciate that too.
